Mariam is a first born in a family of three, two girls and one boy. She comes from Eldama Ravine in Baringo County. When their biological father died. Mariam and her siblings were taken back to stay with their grandmother from her mother’s side. When her mother remarried she came and took Mariam to stay with her together with her new husband leaving behind her 2 siblings. The husband is a Muslim so Mariam had no choice but to be converted to Islam. The mother bore 2 more children with the current husband – both boys.
Mariam gave birth to her baby in Mer in Eldama Ravine. she was taken by her Aunt [sister to her mother] the mother came once to visit and never came again, when it was time to be discharged from hospital the Aunt came and took her home to her mother. The mother had no time for her and the baby because she used to go to work every day. The baby became sick because no one was there to take care of her she fed her when she felt like and she doesn’t love her neither does she like holding her and this went on for months.
In about a months’ time, her aunt came to visit and found the baby was so sick with diarrhoea and vomiting and underweight, she took Mariam and the baby to Eldama Ravine District Hospital where she was admitted, one of the days when she was in hospital, the step father came and beat her up saying that the baby is weak and that Mariam is not taking care of the baby well, the nurses came to her aid and the family were barred from coming to see her again.
They followed up the story and came to know that the step father is the perpetrator; Mariam was transferred to Nairobi Women Hospital Branch in Nakuru and discharged to Jimmia Women Rescue Centre because her home is not safe for her and the baby. It’s not yet sure the stand of the mother about the case because she never reported her husband neither does she support Mariam. No one from the family knows where she is
